Assess Expert System
The ASSESS Expert System is a web-based assessment that uses personal characteristics and abilities to measure competencies that are essential to success in specific positions. It is a flexible, comprehensive assessment system that links assessment to an organization’s business objectives.
ASSESS has been developed and continually refined over the past 16 years by the industrial/organization psychologists of Bigby, Havis & Associates. The measurement scales are based on sound theory and psychometric principles, including normative data on 50,000+ professional & managers.
Use ASSESS information for:
- Competency Modeling
- Individual Coaching
- Developmental Programs
- Team Programs
- Succession Planning
- Promotion & Hiring Processes
The ability to display competence in a given area is the result of many factors working together. These factors include innate characteristics (natural ability, personality) and learned characteristics (knowledge, experience and skills).
The ASSESS Expert System makes it possible for you to:
- Identify the competencies that are critical for successful performance in a job.
- Tailor the language of the reports to your environment.
- Use the instrument to inform your hiring processes so that you hire the best candidate.
- Develop excellence in your workforce.
The ASSESS system administers, scores and evaluates the results of the assessment battery and writes assessment reports much like a psychologist would. Unlike simple report writing systems, ASSESS models the expert judgment of a psychologist by evaluating scores from 3 to 5 measures simultaneously in a profile manner, rather than making simple scale-by-scale evaluations.
ASSESS’s profile-level approach provides a much more coherent evaluation of the candidate and produces very readable, information rich reports. The hiring report provides a structured interview protocol that can be used by the line manager as well as the human resource professional.
The ASSESS competency library includes 38 competencies that are critical to the performance of management, supervisory and professional level employees:
| Thinking | Working | Relating |

Competency Reports
The ASSESS system provides reports that describe the objective measurement of the candidate or employees’ competencies against a specific model:
- Selection Reports include an interview guide, management suggestions, and decision making guidance.
- Development Reports present strengths and potential weaknesses against the established model of Thinking, Working, and Relating. They help the employee and his or her coach to create an individual development plan and provide suggestions to help the employee’s manager understand and coach the employee more effectively. This report lists specific resources that the employee and the supervisor can use to improve performance in the specific competencies where there is a need for development.
- 360 Reports. The ASSESS system provides a user-friendly web-based multi-rater tool so that subordinates, peers, the supervisor, and other designated raters can provide feedback on the manager’s performance in each competency area critical to success on the job. The manager also completes a self rating. More about the 360 process can be found under 360 degree feedback tools. This instrument allows a supervisor to rate several employees, who hold the same job, at the same time, saving time and providing for more meaningful rankings and feedback. The 360 report also guides the employee and the manager through the development planning process and provides suggestions for activities and resources that will help in the development process.
